Free practice sample
Fifteen original Security+ practice questions, unlocked with no signup and instant scoring. The sample draws proportionally across all five domains of the SY0-701 exam objectives — so the mix you see here reflects the shape of the real exam rather than a single topic slice.
Security+ is not a vocabulary test. The hard questions hand you a short scenario and four controls that would all help, then ask which one you would implement first, or which best addresses the stated risk. Getting there means reading the scenario for what is actually being protected and from whom, rather than pattern-matching a keyword to a technology. These questions are written to that standard, and every explanation names the winning answer and the near-miss it beats.
Exam version. This sample targets SY0-701, live since November 2023. CompTIA refreshes Security+ on roughly a three-year cycle, and a successor — SY0-801 — is expected to begin rolling out in late 2026, with SY0-701 remaining available through a transition period after that. Confirm which version you are booking, and its retirement date, on comptia.org before you schedule.
Frequently asked questions about Security+
How many questions are on the actual Security+ exam?
Up to 90 questions in a 90-minute window. The exam mixes multiple-choice with performance-based questions, so the count varies from sitting to sitting — plan your pacing against the clock rather than against a fixed number. Confirm current logistics on comptia.org when you book, since CompTIA sets the format and may change it.
What score do I need to pass Security+?
CompTIA scores SY0-701 on a scaled range topping out at 900, with 750 required to pass. That conversion does not map linearly to a raw percentage, so 750 is not “83%”. Treat a consistent mid-70s raw score on realistic practice questions as the point where you have genuine margin rather than a coin flip.
Which domains should I spend the most time on?
Security Operations is the single largest domain at 28%, and together with Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations (22%) and Security Program Management and Oversight (20%) it accounts for 70% of your scored questions. General Security Concepts is the lightest at 12% — but its vocabulary and mental models turn up inside questions across every other domain, so light weighting is not permission to skip it.
Should I wait for SY0-801, or sit SY0-701 now?
If you are ready now, sit now. SY0-701 has been the live version since November 2023 and remains available through a transition period after its successor begins rolling out in late 2026 — and a certification earned on the current version does not expire early because a new one launched. Waiting means studying against objectives that have not been published yet. Check comptia.org for the retirement date before you commit either way.
What are performance-based questions?
Alongside multiple-choice items, SY0-701 includes performance-based questions that ask you to complete a task or work through a scenario rather than pick a letter. They tend to appear early in the sitting and take longer than a multiple-choice item, which is the main reason candidates run short on time. If one stalls you, flag it and come back — the multiple-choice items are worth banking first. CompTIA describes the current format on comptia.org.
Does Security+ count toward US defense work roles?
Yes. Security+ satisfies US DoD 8140 requirements for a long list of defense work roles, which is a large part of why it appears in more early-career security job listings than any comparable credential. The specific roles it covers are set by the DoD and change over time — verify against the current 8140 qualification matrix rather than a secondhand list.
How is this free sample different from the full Certifym bank?
The sample is a fixed 15-question set spread across the five domains at blueprint proportions, with no account needed. The full Certifym bank is 900+ original Security+ questions with timed full-length simulations, an instant-feedback study mode, and custom domain drills, with new content added weekly. None of the paid-bank items appear in this sample.
